Will Toronto break the record for the highest MLS points tally?

Toronto FC are on course to record the highest MLS points tally in history. They won 4-0 against at LA at the weekend, taking them to 62 points for the 2017 regular season.

LA Galaxy’s 68 points is the current record for the highest MLS points tally in one season. That came back in 1998, but Toronto only need seven points from five games to better it.

Greg Vanney’s side have been impressive this season. Their recent form shows exactly why they are closing in on the record. They have won six games in a row and are unbeaten in their last 11.

Previous results:

Toronto picked up eight points from the fixtures they have already played against the teams they are due to face. As mentioned, they only need seven points to break the record.

While this theory is only hypothetical it gives some grounding that they stand a good chance on previous results alone.

Home form:

Their remaining fixtures also give them a strong chance given that they have three games at BMO Field. Toronto have won 11 of their 14 home games this season, drawing the other three.

highest MLS points tally - can Toronto do it?

Though it is difficult to predict the outcome of MLS fixtures, Toronto fans must be feeling confident that they can break the record. Although it will be an exciting record to hold, Toronto will be more focused on winning the Supporter’s Shield and continuing their good form as they head into the playoffs.

If breaking the record comes down to their final game of the season it will be some spectacle at the impressive Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Do you think Toronto will break the record for the highest points tally in MLS history?

Stade Saputo – Sunday, August 27 – 16:30 ET (21:30 BST)

Match Odds: Montreal 7/4 – Draw 5/2 – Toronto 13/10

Montreal Impact vs Toronto FC: Preview

Sunday afternoon sees Montreal Impact take on Toronto FC in the first regular season meeting between the two in 2017.

Montreal are in a great run of form. They are on a four-game winning streak and confidence is high in the squad. They have won seven of their last eight home games, so Toronto have a challenge on their hands here.

Despite good form, Montreal Impact are sitting 6th in the East. Anything less than a playoff finish will be considered a poor season from this point on.

Montreal Impact vs Toronto FC: Impact together

Toronto are frontrunners to pick up the Supporters’ Shield. Greg Vanney’s side are six points clear of the chasing pack but they cannot afford any slip ups.

The Reds have only lost three away games this season, a league low. They are going to have to find a way to stop Montreal’s key player, Ignacio Piatti, if they are to avoid defeat this weekend.

There should be goals in this one, the two have netted 93 between them, with Toronto scoring a league high 52 of those. Their deadly strike duo, Sebastian Giovinco and Jozy Altidore have a combined 23.

Montreal Impact vs Toronto FC: Prediction

Montreal Impact 2-2 Toronto FC – A score draw, which wouldn’t be the worst result for either side. The Impact are climbing the Eastern Conference and avoiding defeat is going to be key. Toronto have scored 15 goals in their last five games, while Montreal have scored 11. Goals look to be on the cards here.

Could MLS find success by following the NFL in sending teams to Wembley?

It’s no secret that Major League Soccer’s growth is continuing to turn heads. Not only is the league attracting some of Europe’s best footballing talent, but its expansion is showing no signs of slowing down, with new franchises bursting onto the scene at an alarming rate.

But what if Major League Soccer followed in the footsteps of the NFL and brought competitive fixtures to the UK, at Wembley?

The NFL’s success in England has been staggering since the International Series’ inception saw competitive fixtures start being played across the pond a decade ago. The fact it’s a different sport helps massively with the attraction, but there is an ever-growing support base of UK-based MLS fans, so there is certainly an opportunity for MLS to do something similar in the coming years.

Driving up interest for a fixture would arguably be easier for MLS. Instead of bringing over a regular season game, a fixture similar to those played in the International Champions Cup format each summer could work well in Britain. A side from MLS playing a top Premier League club at Wembley in front of 90,000 soccer-crazed fans would make for some spectacle.

You only have to look at the interest that the MLS All-Stars fixture garners each year – with this season’s instalment seeing Real Madrid take on the best of MLS in Chicago on August 2. Allowing English fans to watch their favourite club face off against an MLS outfit firsthand here in the UK would surely heighten the league’s growth.

A mini-league could even be an option. Let’s say, for example, the top side from both the Eastern and Western Conference come to Wembley and play against the Premier League’s first and second place teams each year. The Premier League clubs could each face the two MLS sides, with the showcase finale allowing the two MLS sides to battle it out on the same field at the end of the tournament.

There are plenty of options to be explored if the league’s expansion overseas steps up over the coming seasons and MLS would undoubtedly put on a great show. The ideas above are simply just suggestions in their rawest form. But we would love to see MLS teams showcased on UK soil in the near future.

Have your say below – Would you like to see MLS teams play in the UK? And which MLS clubs would you most like to see play at a stadium like Wembley?

MLS Preview and Prediction: LA Galaxy vs FC Dallas

Competition: Major League Soccer – LA Galaxy vs. FC Dallas

Venue: StubHub Center – Sunday, October 23 – 16:00 ET (21:00 BST)

Match Odds: LA Galaxy 11/8 – Draw 85/40 – Dallas 2/1

Match Preview

LA Galaxy welcome FC Dallas to Stubhub Center on the final weekend of the 2016 regular season, with the away side looking to secure a first-ever Supporters’ Shield title.

LA Galaxy have won the Shield four times but are not in the running this season, although they have secured a playoff berth and will be targeting the MLS Cup in December.

The Galaxy can’t finish anywhere other than third place in the West, so they will have to take part in the Knockout Round of the playoffs no matter what the result of Sunday’s game. But they might well be out to spoil the Dallas party, as watching their opponents lift the shield on their own turf wouldn’t be ideal for the home fans.

Dallas only need a point to claim the Supporters’ Shield after last week’s comeback win over Seattle moved them back to the top of the West over Colorado.

FC Dallas booked their place in the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals with a 5-2 win over Suchitepequez during the week but all focus will now be on trying to secure the Supporters’ Shield.

Oscar Pareja’s men have been in good form of late and should be able to get a result at LA on Sunday to finish top of the West for the second successive season.

A defeat in California would open the door for Colorado, who need to beat Houston at home on Sunday, with all ten games in MLS kicking off simultaneously.

Team News

LA Galaxy will be without Gyasi Zardes and Steven Gerrard, while Robbie Keane is listed as ‘questionable’. Bruce Arena may decide to rest a few players ahead of the playoffs but Jelle Van Damme is available again after serving his one-game suspension last weekend.

FC Dallas remain will be without playmaker Mauro Diaz for the rest of the year after he tore his achilles tendon, while Kellyn Acosta has also been ruled out for the foreseeable future. Zach Loyd is out with concussion but Maynor Figueroa is back in contention after serving a one-match ban.

Key Points

LA Galaxy’s last five: W/D/L/L/W

FC Dallas’ last five: L/D/D/W/W

Key Stat: LA Galaxy have won their last five home games against FC Dallas in MLS by an aggregate scoreline of 11-4.

Score Prediction

LA Galaxy 2-2 FC Dallas – The fact that LA can’t finish any higher of lower than third in the West means they may not take this game as seriously as they could perhaps have done. Their focus will be on the playoffs but entering the postseason with a strong platform is always important and so they won’t want to lose this. Dallas know they only need a point to claim the Shield and should be able to get that in what could be an exciting game.

MLS Preview and Prediction: Montreal Impact vs Toronto FC

Competition: Major League Soccer – Montreal Impact vs. Toronto FC

Venue: Stade Saputo – Sunday, October 16 – 15:00 ET (20:00 BST)

Mauro Biello’s side are sitting 4th in the Eastern Conference on 44 points, five behind Toronto, depending on results going their way, Montreal can still finish the season in third place.

Montreal come into this one having won their last two games. The latest of the two, a 1-0 away win over Orlando.

The Impact have had a strong season and will be looking to take some form into the playoffs, but they have to ensure they get there first. Biello’s side are above the red line by five points. Their fate is in their own hands.

MLS: New York City FC vs. Montreal Impact

Toronto are still in the running to finish top of the East. Though they cannot win the Supporters’ Shield, topping their conference would cap off an impressive regular season.

Grey Vanney’s side are just two points behind both New York franchises, so the remaining two fixtures for all three sides are extremely important.

Toronto have been in great form on the road, winning their last three. They do however, come into this one without a win in four, all home games. This will have frustrated their fans no end, as they could have been in the running to win the Supporters’ Shield had they won those games.

Their latest outing was a surprising defeat to DC, a result they will be looking to forget and patch things over with in this tie. Toronto know they’re in for a tough game with so much at stake.

The Red Bulls are sitting 2nd in the East on 45 points ahead of this tie. They are seven points off the pace in the race for the Supporters’ Shield but will still be looking to contend until winning the silverware is not mathematically possible.

Jesse Marsch’s side trail top spot in the East by two points but have played a game more than leaders Toronto. They can book their playoff place for the 7th consecutive season with a win over Montreal here.

RBNY come into this one after that thrilling 3-3 draw away at Toronto. A great one for the neutrals but disappointing for the Red Bulls as they were leading 3-1.

MLS: New York Red Bulls vs. New York City FC - Red Bulls players

Montreal Impact are sitting 5th in the East and if results go their way this weekend they could move up to 4th. They need to avoid defeat here to ensure they’re not dragged into a dogfight for a playoff finish.

The Impact are four points above the red line but as we know an advantage can quickly fall from under your feet in MLS.

Mauro Biello’s side face a very tough challenge to take all three points here, they’re up against a Red Bulls side who are unbeaten in their last 12 regular season outings.

Montreal come into this tie having lost 3-1 at home to New England, a game that extended their winless run to three. Impact have a very tough run in, so a draw would be a positive result here, giving them good grounding to push on with confidence.

MLS Preview and Prediction: Toronto FC vs Philadelphia Union

Competition: Major League Soccer – Toronto FC vs. Philadelphia Union

Venue: BMO Field – Saturday, September 24 – 17:00 ET (22:00 BST)

Match Odds: Toronto FC 7/10 – Draw 11/4 – Philadelphia Union 7/2

Match Preview

Toronto FC welcome Eastern Conference rivals Philadelphia Union to BMO Field this weekend with both sides well in the running for a playoff finish.

Toronto need just one point to book their place in the knockout rounds but they will be battling all the way to try and win the Supporters’ Shield.

If Toronto can rally late on and win the Supporters’ Shield they will be the first Canadian side to do so in MLS history and they would be giving themselves a chance of a domestic treble, having already won the Canadian Championship earlier on in the year.

Greg Vanney will be expecting nothing less than three points from his side in this one. They drew their last game 3-3 at home against RBNY, showing great desire to not give up on the points having been 3-1 down.

Philadelphia Union come into this one in contention for a playoff finish. They sit 4th in the East on 41 points trailing Toronto, who are top, by six.

The Union are now winless in their last three, picking up just one point from nine. They lost 2-1 against Portland last time out.

If results go against Philadelphia they could slip down into 5th. There is still a chance of finishing below the red line and if that happens from this point it would be a devastating end to the regular season.

Philadelphia just need to get out of this run of bad form. They’ve won just three of their last 11 regular season games and that kind of form would make it difficult to challenge in the playoffs. They are more than capable and a positive result here would certainly give them confidence.

LA Galaxy looked strong during their double gameweek, picking up four points and scoring seven goals along the way.

Bruce Arena will be disappointed not to have taken all six points from their two games as they would have closed the gap at the top of the Western Conference to just two points.

Galaxy do have a realistic chance of winning the Supporters’ Shield but are relying on other results, they must ensure they finish the regular season well to give themselves the best chance of picking up the silverware.

LA have lost just one of their last 15 games but have won just two of their last 11 on the road. This isn’t going to be an easy tie for them as they face an SKC side who have picked up 19 points from a possible 21 in their last seven home games.

Despite winning the cup, Dallas come into this one with off the back off a mixed bag of results in their last five regular season games. They lost to Colorado last weekend, so it is essential they do everything to avoid back-to-back defeats here.

Oscar Pareja needs to get his side in a focused but in relaxed frame of mind for their remaining five games, they have some tricky outings ahead and are relying on other results going their way to avoid being caught by Colorado.

Dallas beat NYCFC in their inaugural season in the only meeting between the sides. This is their first visit to Yankee Stadium and they know their facing a New York side who are capable of beating anyone on their own patch.
