Premier League Preview and Prediction: West Brom vs Burnley

Competition: Premier League – West Brom vs. Burnley

Venue: The Hawthorns – Monday, November 21 – 20:00 GMT (15:00 ET)

Match Odds: West Brom 10/11 – Draw 23/10 – Burnley 7/2

Match Preview

West Bromwich Albion welcome Burnley to The Hawthorns for the Premier League’s Monday night clash as both sides return to action following the international break.

The Baggies most recent outing saw them pick up a 2-1 away win at last year’s champions, Leicester City – all the more impressive considering the Foxes hadn’t suffered a home league defeat for 20 games.

That win would have given West Brom a huge confidence boost following a run of five games without a win going into it.

Tony Pulis will hope his side have now turned a corner and can make a real challenge to finish in the top half of the table this season – a win here would be the first time they’ve recorded consecutive victories this season.

Confidence will be equally high in the Burnley camp after a dramatic last minute winner from Ashley Barnes secured a 3-2 win at home to Crystal Palace last time out.

The Clarets are undefeated in their last three games (W2, D1) and a win here would lift them into ninth place, sending out a real statement to anyone who thought they’d be this year’s whipping boys.

Sean Dyche will be hoping his side can improve on their poor away record however, as results have been hard to come by away from Turf Moor (D1, L3).

The last time these two sides played each other, it ended in a 2-2 draw at Turf Moor back in February 2015. The previous meeting at The Hawthorns saw West Brom run out comfortable 4-0 winners in September 2014.

Team News

West Brom could still be without both Saido Berahino (fitness) and Nacer Chadli (knee surgery), while striker Salomon Rondon should return to action following a hamstring injury.

Burnley defender Stephen Ward is a doubt as he continues to recover from a hamstring injury which kept him out of the home win against Crystal Palace a few weeks ago.

Key Points

West Brom’s last five: D/D/L/L/W

Burnley’s last five: L/L/W/D/W

Key Stat: Burnley haven’t won at The Hawthorns since 1969. They’ve played there on ten occasions since then in all competitions, drawing twice and losing the other eight.

Key Player: Matt Phillips – He scored the winner for the Baggies at Leicester and really impressed. He’ll be looking to build on that with another fine performance here.

West Brom 1-1 Burnley – West Brom and Burnley will be confident from their previous results and a draw would probably be a reasonable outcome for both sides. Score draw.

Premier League Preview and Prediction: Leicester City vs West Brom

Competition: Premier League – Leicester City FC vs. West Bromwich Albion FC

Venue: King Power Stadium – Sunday, November 6 – 16:30 GMT (11:30 ET)

Match Odds: Leicester 3/4 – Draw 5/2 – West Brom 9/2

Match Preview

Leicester welcome West Brom to the King Power Stadium for the final Premier League game of the weekend on a busy Sunday afternoon of fixtures.

The Foxes will be on a high after a goalless draw away at FC Copenhagen in midweek saw them edge closer to securing a place in the last-16 knockout stages of the Champions League.

Claudio Ranieri’s side also picked up a valuable point in the league away at Tottenham last weekend, however, inconsistency has scuppered the defence of their title.

The reigning champions are currently in mid-table but are still unbeaten at home (W3, D2), so they’ll be confident of a positive result, which would see them go three consecutive games without defeat for the first time this season.

West Brom can’t seem to buy a win at the moment, recording just one victory in their last nine league games (D4, L4), so they need results to improve to avoid being drawn into a relegation scrap.

Tony Pulis won’t be concerned just yet though, as he has the know-how and will point to the tough run of recent fixtures as a reason for why they’ve struggled for wins, having faced Tottenham, Liverpool and Man City in their last three.

The Baggies don’t travel particularly well, with just two wins in their last 19 Premier League away games (D9, L8), so they will desperately want to change that record.

The previous meeting between these two sides was an entertaining 2-2 draw at Leicester back in March.

Team News

Leicester goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel is out after breaking his hand in midweek, so Robert Zieler will start in between the sticks. Islam Slimani should return following a muscle injury.

West Brom will be without standout man Nacer Chadli after he underwent knee surgery. James McClean will miss the game through suspension after picking up five yellow cards, while Saido Berahino (fitness) and Jonas Olsson (hamstring) are out. Claudio Yacob returns to the squad following suspension.

Key Points

Leicester’s last five: L/D/L/W/D

West Brom’s last five: D/D/D/L/L

Key Stat: Goals  There has been a combined total of 14 goals in the last three games involving these two sides.

Key Player: Ahmed Musa – The Nigerian has come to the fore recently, netting two goals in his last two games – he could be a great player for the Foxes both this season and in years to come.

Score Prediction

Leicester City 2-1 West Brom – Leicester have been strong at home this season despite their inconsistency, while West Brom’s form has dipped. It should be a tightly contested affair, but the Foxes will fancy their chances of edging it.

Premier League Preview and Prediction: Tottenham vs West Brom

Competition: Premier League – Tottenham Hotspur vs. West Bromwich Albion

Venue: White Hart Lane – Monday, April 25 – 20:00 BST (15:00 ET)

Match Odds: Tottenham 2/9 – Draw 5/1 – West Brom 14/1

Match Preview

Tottenham host West Brom on Monday night as they look to keep their Premier League title charge alive with the end of the season drawing ever closer.

Spurs will be closely watching Leicester’s game with Swansea on Sunday and will be hoping the Foxes drop points as they did last weekend, with the Lilywhites ready to pounce on any mistakes when they play a day later.

Mauricio Pochettino’s team have impressed all year, but last week’s 4-0 demolition of Stoke at the Britannia was one of the best away performances any team has put in this season.

Tottenham were unplayable and could have scored six or seven goals. If they play with the same intensity this week, West Brom will stand little chance in halting their progress.

The Baggies are stuck in limbo with four games to go. They have little to play for, with relegation seemingly impossible, and so it’s perhaps difficult for Tony Pulis to motivate his players.

West Brom sit ten points clear of safety with four to go. They have reached that magical ’40-point’ mark and are now seemingly waiting for the season to end.

They come into this game in poor form, having lost three in a row, and are looking to end a five-game winless run at White Hart Lane on Monday.

The Baggies lost 2-0 away at Arsenal on Thursday night and the lack of recovery time ahead of this game will likely play into Tottenham’s hands.

The reverse fixture saw the sides draw 1-1 at the Hawthorns, with Dele Alli’s early strike cancelled out by James McClean before halftime. Tottenham have only won one of their last five clashes against the Baggies but will hope to cruise to three points on Monday.

Team News

Mauricio Pochettino has just one injury concern as Nabil Bentaleb remains out. Clinton N’Jie is not yet fit enough to feature but will be pushing for a place on the substitutes bench. Pochettino is expected to name an unchanged team to the one that swept Stoke away last Monday.

West Brom have only had three days to prepare for this game following their Thursday night loss at Arsenal. Tony Pulis will not be able to call on Spurs loanee Alex Pritchard, while Chris Brunt and James Morrison remain injured.

Key Points

Tottenham’s last five: W/W/D/W/W

West Brom’s last five: L/D/L/L/L

Key Stat: West Brom have only lost one of their last five Premier League visits to White Hart Lane (W1 D3), with Tottenham’s last home win against the Baggies coming in 2012.

Key Player: Harry Kane – Tottenham’s star striker has proved his critics wrong by enjoying another fine season. He leads the scoring chart with 24 and is now just two strikes away from hitting 50 Premier League goals. After scoring eight in his last six league outings, Kane will expect to find the net against the Baggies here.

Score Prediction

Tottenham 4-0 West Brom – Tottenham are playing some incredible football and don’t look to be running out of steam at a crucial part of the season. Regardless of the Leicester result on Sunday, Spurs will be out to seal three points and should prove far too strong for the Baggies. West Brom have only scored once in their last five outings and will struggle to penetrate a strong Tottenham defence here.

Venue: Emirates Stadium – Thursday, April 21 – 19:45 BST (14:45 ET)

Match Odds: Arsenal 2/7 – Draw 17/4 – West Brom 10/1

Match Preview

Arsenal host West Brom in a rare Thursday night Premier League clash this week, with the Gunners desperate for three points as they look to guarantee Champions League football for next term.

Arsene Wenger’s side have endured a tough campaign, with many expecting them to win the Premier League title a few months back, before a terrible run of form has seen them slip down to fourth.

Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace did little to encourage the home fans, who have watched their side win just four of their last 13 league outings.

Arsenal’s title hopes are not officially over, but they will have to win all of their remaining five games and hope Leicester fail to pick up more than two points. Both scenarios seem unlikely and so it appears Wenger’s priority now has to be securing a top four finish.

The Gunners sit fourth entering this game but have Manchester United and West Ham closing in behind and so it’s crucial that the north London side seal three points here.

West Brom have little to play for for the remainder of the season. They sit 14th and have reached that magical 40-point mark so relegation fears have disappeared.

However, Tony Pulis will be frustrated with the fact that his side have lost back-to-back games coming into this tie. Saturday’s 1-0 home loss to Watford would have been particularly hard to take, considering Saido Berahino missed two penalties in the second half.

The Baggies have only won one of their last 11 away games in the Premier League and are huge outsiders to leave the Emirates with three points on Thursday.

That said, West Brom have already beaten Arsenal this season, recording a 2-1 win at the Hawthorns in November. That win ended a 10-game winless streak against the Gunners and so this might be closer than many expect.

Team News

Mikel Arteta remains out injured for Arsenal, though long-term absentees Santi Cazorla and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have returned to training. However, this game will likely come too soon for both. Jack Wilshere and Tomas Rosicky are also close to returning but are lacking match fitness and so neither are expected to return to the starting lineup. Danny Welbeck will hope to continue to spearhead the attack ahead of Olivier Giroud and Theo Walcott.

West Brom have just two injuries to worry about as midfielders Chris Brunt and James Morrison will miss this clash. Saido Berahino will hope to keep his place in the side despite missing two penalties last weekend.

Key Points

Arsenal’s last five: D/W/W/D/D

West Brom’s last five: W/L/D/L/L

Key Stat: Arsenal have only won four of their last 13 Premier League matches – only one victory more than West Brom have managed in the same time.

Key Player: Alexis Sanchez – The Chilean star has seemingly come through a tough spell and is looking sharp once again. He has contributed to seven goals in his last six league outings and will expect to hurt the Baggies on Thursday evening.

Score Prediction

Arsenal 2-1 West Brom – Arsenal have a lot more to play for than West Brom as we enter the final few games of the season and they need three points on Thursday. They should get them but West Brom might offer a tougher test than most are expecting. A win for Arsenal would take their total to 500 in the Premier League and that should be the outcome here.

Premier League Preview and Prediction: West Brom vs Crystal Palace

Competition: Premier League – West Bromwich Albion vs. Crystal Palace

Venue: The Hawthorns – Saturday, February 27 – 17:30 GMT (12:30 EST)

Match Odds: West Bromwich Albion 6/4 – Draw 11/5 – Crystal Palace 19/10

Match Preview

West Brom welcome Crystal Palace to The Hawthorns in this week’s Saturday night Premier League clash, with Baggies manager Tony Pulis looking for a win over his former club.

West Brom have struggled to put in strong performances this season but will be pleased by the fact that they are eight points clear of the relegation zone after 26 games. They have only won one of their last six, though, and need to try and find some consistency.

They haven’t won at home since early January and Baggies fans will still be worried about the threat of relegation as after Saturday’s game they play Leicester, Manchester United and Arsenal.

West Bromwich Albion’s Premier League record: P26 – W8 – D8 – L10

Their 3-1 FA Cup loss at Reading was hugely disappointing and they will hope to bounce back with a Premier League win here.

Crystal Palace have not won a Premier League game in nine outings and have been sucked into a potential relegation dogfight. They are level on points with West Brom and so Saturday’s game is a big one for both sides.

After an unbelievable start to the season, and potential talk of European qualification, the Eagles have fallen from grace at a rate of knots.

Their FA Cup run, which was extended at the weekend following a 1-0 at White Hart Lane against Spurs, should suppress groans from supporters but things need to change for Palace, and soon.

Crystal Palace’s Premier League record: P26 – W9 – D5 – L12

The reverse fixture at Selhurst Park ended 2-0 to the Eagles and West Brom will be out for revenge here in what should be a close-fought game.

Team News

West Bromwich Albion will be hopeful Craig Dawson and Gareth McAuley will shake off injuries in time to feature but both are doubts. James Morrison, Jonny Evans and Callum McManaman are all out.

Crystal Palace are only missing two first team regulars as James McArthur and Jason Puncheon remain out. Yannick Bolasie is back and should start here after coming off the bench in Palace’s FA Cup win at Tottenham on Sunday.

Key Points

West Brom’s last five in the Premier League: L/D/D/L/W

Crystal Palace’s last five in the Premier League: L/L/L/D/L

Key Stat: Crystal Palace are without a win in nine matches in the Premier League.

Key Player: Salomon Rondon – The Venezuelan striker has become the leading man in the West Brom attack and the Baggies will want to take advantage of Crystal Palace’s bad run of league form here. Rondon will be a nuisance for the Palace defence from the start and will expect to find the scoresheet.

Score Prediction

West Bromwich Albion 1-1 Crystal Palace – It will be extremely difficult for the Baggies to keep out a strong Palace attack on Saturday. The return of Yannick Bolasie is crucial for the Eagles, proven by his return coinciding with the FA Cup win at Spurs last weekend. However, Tony Pulis will want to avoid defeat when his former club visit on Saturday evening and this looks set to be a close contest.

Match Odds: West Brom 11/2 – Draw 16/5 – Arsenal 1/2

Match Preview

West Bromwich Albion welcome Arsenal to the Hawthorns on Saturday afternoon as Premier League action returns following the international break.

The Baggies have had two weeks to reflect on consecutive defeats to Leicester and Man United, which has left them thirteenth in the table after a satisfactory opening 12 games.

Tony Pulis has seen his side struggle to put the ball in the back of the net this season, scoring just ten goals in the Premier League, meaning they have the joint worst attacking record alongside Aston Villa and Stoke.

Another problem for West Brom has been picking up points on home soil, recording just one win from six games at the Hawthorns (D1, L4), so they’ll be desperate to put that right.

West Brom’s Premier League record: P12 – W4 – D2 – L6

By stark contrast to West Brom’s home form, Arsenal boast the best away record in the league with five wins out of six on the road.

The Gunners come into this in good form, even though their run of five straight league wins was ended by Tottenham, following the 1-1 draw at home to their North London rivals last time out.

A win for Arsenal over West Brom would take them top of the Premier League and put pressure on Man City who face Liverpool in the evening fixture on Saturday.

Arsenal’s Premier League record: P12 – W8 – D2 – L2

The last meeting between these two sides was a comfortable 4-1 win for Arsenal on the final day of last season, while the last clash at the Hawthorns saw the Gunners claim a narrow 1-0 victory thanks to a Danny Welbeck header.

Team News

West Brom will be without Gareth McAuley who is serving a one-match ban following his red card against Man United. Ben Foster remains out with a long-term knee injury, while the on-loan Serge Gnabry cannot play against his parent club. Chris Brunt’s fitness will be assessed as he has a slight groin problem.

Hector Bellerin will return to the squad following a groin injury. Aaron Ramsey (hamstring) and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (hamstring) are unlikely to recover in time for this game but could return in midweek. Laurent Koscielny may be rested following an understandably tough week for the Frenchman. Meanwhile, Theo Walcott (calf), Tomas Rosicky (knee), Jack Wilshere (ankle) and Danny Welbeck (knee) remain out.

Key Points

West Brom’s last five in the Premier League: L/W/W/L/L

Arsenal’s last five in the Premier League: W/W/W/W/D

Key Stat: West Brom have only beaten Arsenal once in their last 13 meetings in the Premier League (D2, L10).

Key Player: Mesut Ozil – The German midfield maestro has been influential this season and already has ten assists to his name. He’ll be hoping to continue his fine form.

Score Prediction

West Brom 0-2 Arsenal  Arsenal have the joint second strongest defence in the league. Combine that fact with West Brom’s lack of goals, poor home form and the Gunners’ excellent away record and you can only really see one outcome here.

Match Preview

Crystal Palace host West Bromwich Albion on Saturday afternoon in a clash which sees Tony Pulis return to his old stomping ground, Selhurst Park with the Baggies.

Palace will want defer from their current form as they have only managed one win in their last three after a solid start which saw them sit second in the league early on.

Playing without a registered striker, Palace have suffered without the outlet of a natural forward and Bakary Sako (despite his great form) isn’t the answer in the search for an ideal lone frontman.

Crystal Palace’s record in the Premier League: P7 – W4 – D0 – L3

Tony Pulis’ return to Selhurst Park will be the main draw from this clash as much has been said about who has done a better job at Palace, Pulis or Alan Pardew.

Boasting a great managerial record, Pulis has succeeded where ever he has been and Palace was no different. However, he has struggled to get West Brom to the level they should be operating at so far this term.

West Brom’s record in the Premier League: P7 – W2 – D2 – L3

Suffering with inconsistency, Pulis won’t suffer relegation with West Brom, but a top half finish is a fair way away at the moment.

A win in south London on Saturday would certainly be a huge boost for the Baggies and they will take confidence from the 2-0 win there back in April.

Team News

Crystal Palace are missing up to six players, with Damien Delaney, Mile Jedinak, Joel Ward, Connor Wickham, Marouane Chamakh and Kwesi Appiah all likely to miss out.

West Brom are without Ben Foster as he is still recovering from a serious knee injury. Gareth McAuley is a doubt with a leg injury but could be fit to start. Jonas Olsson is a doubt with an ankle problem.

Key Points

Crystal Palace’s last five: W/W/L/L/W

West Brom’s last five: L/W/D/W/L

Key Stat: West Brom have kept a clean sheet in five of their last seven away matches.

Key Player: Saido Berahino – With two goals in two, the English forward has forced himself back into the West Brom side after his summer transfer saga and will be important if the Baggies are to pick up points here.

Score Prediction

Crystal Palace 1-0 West Brom – We’re not expecting much from this affair in terms of goals as it should be a tight encounter. West Brom are good at defending as a unit and Palace are not frightened to attack in numbers. Though we see the home side just edging a low scoring affair in front of their own fans.

Premier League Preview and Prediction: West Bromwich Albion vs Chelsea

Competition: Premier League – West Bromwich Albion vs. Chelsea

Venue: The Hawthorns – Sunday, August 23 – 13:30 BST (08:30 ET)

Match Odds: West Bromwich Albion 9/2 – Draw 11/4 – Chelsea 8/13

Match Preview

West Bromwich Albion have another tricky fixture as they host Chelsea this weekend. Both sides are still looking for their first win of the season.

West Brom picked up their first point of the season last weekend in their 0-0 draw against promoted Watford. Tony Pulis’ side are yet to score in either of their games this season, but new signing Salomon Rondon has been bought in to lead the line.

The Baggies last win came over the Premier League champions at the back end of last season. Pulis’ side had a good preseason but have struggled to relay that form so far this campaign.

It is difficult to tell whether or not this is a good time for West Brom to play the defending champions, as although they are out of form they will see this a good chance to pick up their first win of the season.

Chelsea have had a very poor start to the season and even this early on, trailing Manchester City by five points is a concern for Mourinho.

Last weekends demolition at the hands of City seems to have sparked the Blues back into life in the transfer market. Having signed Pedro they are now being linked with Juventus’ Paul Pogba. The future of John Stones remains unclear but it is obvious he is a player Chelsea are hoping to sign.

This is Chelsea’s worst start to a Premier League season since 1998/99 and they cannot afford to drop more points in this one. The pressure is certainly on Jose Mourinho and his players will be all too aware of the wrath they could potentially face from the boss and fans alike if they do not win here.

Team News

West Brom are still missing Ben Foster. Salomon Rondon will be hoping to start and show what he can do against a struggling Chelsea defence. Joleon Lescott will be hopeful of regaining his first team place after being left out of the 0-0 draw with Watford.

Jose Mourinho could bring Thibaut Courtois back into the starting line-up after he served his one game suspension. Asmir Begovic will certainly feel hard done by if this is the case as he without question was Chelsea’s best player on the pitch last weekend and stopped the scoreline from being anymore humiliating. Victor Moses and Oscar look set to be sidelined, while new signing Baba Rahman is tipped to start at left-back, pushing Cesar Azpilicueta into his more natural position of right-back. Branislav Ivanovic could find himself on the bench after he has struggled to find form this season. The decision to look out for is whether or not Mourinho starts John Terry after his substitution last weekend. Pedro may well feature but it remains to be seen whether or not he will start. Lots of talking points for the potential Chelsea line-up and there will no doubt be some controversy.

Key Points

West Brom’s form: L/D

Chelsea’s form: D/L

Key Stat: Leaky – Only Sunderland (seven) have conceded more goals than Chelsea so far this season, not a stat you could have imagined hearing just two weeks ago.

Key Player: Nemanja Matic – The big Serbian’s performance will be vital to how this game goes for the defending champions. If he can control the midfield, marshall the back-four and steady the ship Chelsea stand a great chance of picking up three points.

Score Prediction

West Brom 1-1 Chelsea – West Brom to pick up a solid point against a disorganised, struggling Chelsea side. Pulis will know his side can frustrate Jose Mourinho’s men which will lead to their weaknesses showing yet again on the pitch.

2014/15 Premier League Season Review: West Bromwich Albion

Premier League Final Position: 13th

Review

West Brom finished the Premier League season in mid-table after Tony Pulis turned around their fortunes when he took over the side in January. Pulis lost just one of his opening eight games with the club and he marshalled them into 13th, which is a respectable finish. It was a vast improvement on their 2013/14 season, they have finished four places higher, from 17th to 13th, and ended on 44 points.

Best Moment

3-0 win over Chelsea – they finished off their home fixtures in some style and became just the third side to beat the champions. This result was a great example of how Pulis rejuvenated Albion side and his players showed great self-belief.

Worst Moment

4-1 loss at home to Queens Park Rangers. This was a very poor result for West Brom but luckily it was never going to threaten their Premier League status.

Player of the Year

Saido Berahino – the Englishman had a great season, scoring 14 goals and he gave a really good account of himself. West Brom fans will be desperate to see their starlet stay for the long-haul.

Biggest Win

West Brom 4-0 Burnley (Sep 28, 2014)

Biggest Defeat

West Bromwich Albion 0-3 Swansea (Aug 30, 2014)
Tottenham Hotspur 0-3 West Bromwich Albion (Jan 31, 2015)
Manchester City 0-3 West Bromwich Albion (Mar 21, 2015)
West Bromwich Albion 1-4 Queens Park Rangers (Apr 4, 2015)
Arsenal 4-1 West Bromwich Albion (May 24, 2015)

What to improve for the 2015 season…

West Brom must aim to be more consistent in the coming season. This is more than possible under Tony Pulis and the Baggies faithful will hope he can build upon a great end to the season. We can expect Pulis to further solidify his squad with defensive options. His business to bring in Darren Fletcher proved to be a hit and there will be plenty of players the Baggies boss will have in mind.

Crystal Palace fan favourite hints at exit

Crystal Palace goalkeeper Julian Speroni has hinted that although he has just signed a new one year contract extension, he may still leave the club in an interview with South London Today.

On Tuesday night, Speroni plays in a testimonial against his former club Dundee United, which could be his last game for Crystal Palace.

He is quoted as saying: “I’m here now and have one more year on my contract. But it doesn’t mean anything.

“I could be gone in the summer. Football is a very unique business. I just want to make Tuesday night special.

“If that is my last time I’m going to be at Selhurst Park then I want it to be something to remember.”

Embed from Getty Images

After being ever-present in the Crystal Palace goal the news of an exit would come as a surprise. But the 36 year old is keen to carry on his career whether it be at Selhurst Park or elsewhere.

Speroni goes on to add: “I feel blessed in terms of my fitness but I never take anything for granted. I keep working my best. When the time comes to make a decision then I will make the best one for everybody.”

The Argentine stopper has made 357 league appearances for the Eagles since his move from Dundee United in 2004.

Crystal Palace are expected to see several players come in and many leave this summer as Alan Pardew reshapes the squad, and Julian Speroni could be one of the casualties.

West Bromwich Albion could make a move as former Palace boss Tony Pulis is a keen admirer and will be in the market for a new ‘keeper with Ben Foster a long-term injury worry.

Who could Crystal Palace look to replace Julian Speroni with if he were to leave?
