Match Preview

Newcastle host Sunderland in what is set to be one of the most important Tyne-Wear derbies in the Premier League era. Both sides are fighting relegation and this is as big a six-pointer as you could see.

Newcastle started life under new manager Rafa Benitez with a 1-0 loss to Leicester last Monday, but there were positives from their performance and the Spaniard will hope his side can now build on that display with a crucial win over their local rivals.

A win against any side would be huge for Newcastle – who sit 19th in the table – but a win against fellow relegation strugglers and fierce rivals means this is undoubtedly the biggest game of the Magpies season.

They have lost their last six meeting with the Black Cats and must try and get the crowd behind them early. The Magpies have only lost one of their last four at home in the league and that’s a positive heading into this game.

Sunderland manager Sam Allardyce will face up against Rafa Benitez once again but with an enormous amount at stake, all attentions will be on what takes place on the field, rather than in the dugouts.

The Black Cats have been in relatively good form of late and enter the weekend outside the bottom three. They have only lost one of their last five and will be desperate to avoid defeat at St James’ Park on Sunday afternoon.

One major problem for Sunderland is their defence. They haven’t kept a clean sheet in 15 consecutive league outings and that will be a concern for Allardyce and his team.

The reverse fixture ended 3-0 to Sunderland back in October in what was Allardyce’s first home game. But now Benitez will be hoping his first home game will reap similar rewards.

This is sure to be a fiery clash between two sides fighting for their lives. You don’t want to miss this.

Team News

Rafa Benitez might name an unchanged team to the side that lost at Leicester on Monday. The new manager has 12 injury concerns heading into his first home game, with Chancel Mbemba the only player on the injury list in contention to recover. He will face a late fitness test but Paul Dummett, Cheick Tiote, Fabricio Coloccini, Sylvain Marveaux, Curtis Good, Kevin Mbabu, Papiss Cisse, Massadio Haidara, Gabriel Obertan, Ivan Toney and Tim Krul are all still sidelined.

Sunderland have much less to worry about on the injury front, with Duncan Watmore the only player certain to miss the game. Emmanuel Eboue is unlikely to feature as he continues to build up fitness, while Wahbi Khazri, Jermain Defoe, Jeremain Lens and Lee Cattermole are also doubts but should recover in time to play.

Key Points

Newcastle’s last five: W/L/L/L/L

Sunderland’s last five: D/W/L/D/D

Key Stat: Sunderland have won each of the last six Tyne-Wear derbies in the Premier League – the best ever winning streak in this derby by either club.

Key Player: Jermain Defoe – The Sunderland striker has netted seven goals in his last eight league games away from home and will be tasked with firing the Black Cats to victory at St James’ Park on Sunday. He proved to be dangerous against Newcastle last season and will be out to hurt them once again here.

Score Prediction

Newcastle 2-1 Sunderland – This is a colossal game for both sides, but you’d have to say Newcastle need the win more for two reasons: They are playing at home, and are 19th in the table, a point behind Sunderland who sit in 17th. A draw will likely keep Sunderland outside the bottom three, depending on the Norwich result, and they will set up to avoid defeat. But Newcastle looked much better against Leicester and need to show the fight and desire that Benitez will demand if they are to win this game and subsequently stay up. Narrow home win.

Match Odds: Sunderland 7/5 – Draw 23/10 – Newcastle 19/10

Match Preview

Sunderland face Newcastle in the first Tyne-Wear derby of the season on Sunday in what is an enormous Premier League game for both clubs.

Sunderland will hope that their managerial change continues to see the club beat their local rivals. Sam Allardyce will lead the his new side out in what will be his home debut, knowing the last three Sunderland managers have also faced Newcastle in their second game and all three have won.

This will not be Allardyce’s first Tyne-Wear derby experience though. He led Newcastle out at the Stadium of Light during his short tenure in charge back in November 2007 in a game that ended 1-1.

The Black Cats sit bottom of the Premier League table after nine games and have yet to win a match. Last weekend’s 1-0 loss at West Brom added to their woes and they will hope a win against their fiercest rivals can turn their fortunes around.

Sunderland’s Premier League record: P9 – W0 – D3 – L6

Newcastle boss Steve McClaren will be experiencing his first Tyne-Wear derby here and will hope his side can build on last weekend’s 6-2 win against Norwich.

That was Newcastle’s first league win of the season but they still sit in the bottom three and so Sunday’s clash is a monumental one, even at this early stage.

Newcastle’s Premier League record: P9 – W – D3 – L5

Newcastle haven’t beaten Sunderland since 2011 – a run of seven without victory has followed, with the Black Cats winning each of the last five meetings.

Team News

Sunderland will be without Adam Matthews and Jack Rodwell, who are both ruled out through injury, while Ola Toivonen and Duncan Watmore are unlikely to feature. Sam Allardyce could stick with the same team that lost at West Brom in his opener.

Newcastle boss Steve McLaren will also be likely to keep with the same side that beat Norwich last time out. Tim Krul, Karl Darlow, Rolando Aarons, Emmanuel Riviere, Steven Taylor, Curtis Good and Gabriel Obertan are all out. While Kevin Mbabu is a doubt.

Key Points

Sunderland’s last five: L/L/L/D/L

Newcastle’s last five: L/L/D/L/W

Key Stat: The last three Sunderland managers have faced Newcastle in their second games in charge, with all three winning those matches. Trend.

Key Player: Georginio Wijnaldum – The Dutch playmaker comes into this game of the back of a sublime display as he scored four goals in Newcastle’s 6-2 win against Norwich last weekend. If he produces anything like that performance, Sunderland are in trouble.

Score Prediction

Sunderland 1-1 Newcastle – This is an almost impossible one to call. Newcastle may have got their first win last week in emphatic style, but they conceded six in their last away game and have only scored once on the road all year. Their terrible record against Sunderland in recent times makes it hard to see them winning, though the Black Cats don’t look strong enough to take three points either. Draw.

Sunderland play host to Newcastle United this Sunday in the Tyne-Wear Derby with nine points separating the sides.

The Black Cats desperately need to pick up points now as they want to avoid the possibility of being dragged into the bottom three of the Premier League. Their fight for survival can take a huge step in the right direction if they can win this one as they are just one point above the drop with eight games to play.

The Toon Army haven’t lived up to expectations this season and look like they’re going to end mid-table. They might not have too much to play for in the league but will want a strong run in to attract players this summer to rebuild for next campaign, starting with a victory over their bitter rivals.

Sunderland are without a win in seven league games and have registered just one win in their last 13 so something is going to need to change if the Black Cats are to pick up all three points.

A win in this one will lift spirits sky high but given their recent run of form, the chances of that happening look slim for Dick Advocaat’s men.

Newcastle’s form hasn’t been an awful lot better, winning just one of their last seven league games and losing their last three on the bounce as John Carver is struggling to get his players to perform to full potential.

Sunderland haven’t lost this fixture since 2011, winning four of the last six meetings and will be hoping they can continue that unbeaten record in the derby come Sunday evening.

Newcastle will be itching to put that run to an end at the Stadium of Light and their ever-optimistic fans will feel this is a good opportunity to heap some more misery on their struggling rivals.

Team News

Sunderland have four injury concerns to deal with. Wes Brown, Ricardo Alvarez, Will Buckley (all knee) and Emanuele Giaccherini (ankle) are set to miss out. The Black Cats will be hoping Jermaine Defoe can give them something to cheer about in attack, while Adam Johnson is in line to start after coming off the bench against West Ham last time out.

Newcastle have nine key players missing for this tie through injury and two suspensions. Papiss Cisse and Fabricio Coloccini are both serving bans. Cheik Tiote (knee), Steven Taylor (calf), Rolando Aarons (thigh), Paul Dummett and Massadio Haidara (both knee) are all sidelined. John Carver’s options are so limited, but we can expect Mike Williamson and Daryl Janmaat to be paired at centre-back, with Jack Colback likely to start at left-back.

Key Points

Sunderland’s last five: D/L/D/L/L

Newcastle United’s last five: L/W/L/L/L

Key Stat: Newcastle haven’t won this fixture since 2011 and need to put that run to an end.

Key Player: Jack Colback – The ex-Sunderland man will be returning to the Stadium of Light for the first time since leaving on a free transfer to his boyhood club Newcastle. He famously scored for Sunderland against the Magpies in last season’s fixture and could play a vital role and write himself into Newcastle folklore in this one.

Score Prediction

Sunderland 1-2 Newcastle – The Toon Army will put that winless run in this fixture to bed in a typically heated tie against their struggling rivals to pile the misery on Dick Advocaat and his Black Cats.

Premier League Preview and Prediction: Newcastle United vs. Sunderland

Sunday’s afternoon kickoff sees the return of the Tyne-Wear derby as St. James’ Park will see Newcastle plays host to an out of form Sunderland side.

Alan Pardew’s Magpies will be the favourites heading into this one, as they lay eighth in the table, seven places higher and seven points better off than the fifteenth-placed Black Cats.

This is a fixture which usually brings high drama, and this one looks set to be another classic installment despite the fact that this is hardly the best teams these two clubs have fielded in the Premier League era.

The Magpies come into the tie with a resurgence of form having won their last four at home, including the victory which ended Chelsea’s hopes of an unbeaten season two weeks ago.

They have however, had less success against their rivals recently, having not beaten Sunderland since August 2011.

However, Gus Poyet’s men are without a win in their last six Premier League games, though they have drawn five of them.

Sunderland interestingly, has a total of ten draws this term, having only played sixteen times so far. So their form isn’t terrible but they need to start turning draws into wins and Sunday would be a perfect time to do so.

They have won the last three Tyne-Wear derby games, and so Gus Poyet has reason for optimism heading into this one.

You’d be a brave man to predict this one, but whatever the result, we’re sure this will be an entertaining Christmas treat for all who watch.

Score Prediction: Newcastle United 1 – 1 Sunderland

Key Player: Ayoze Perez – whether Pardew decides to play him up top or plays him wide left of a front three, Perez will work tirelessly for the team. And he’s been known to score vital goals so far this year.
