Premier League Preview and Prediction: West Brom vs Crystal Palace

Competition: Premier League – West Bromwich Albion vs. Crystal Palace

Venue: The Hawthorns – Saturday, February 27 – 17:30 GMT (12:30 EST)

Match Odds: West Bromwich Albion 6/4 – Draw 11/5 – Crystal Palace 19/10

Match Preview

West Brom welcome Crystal Palace to The Hawthorns in this week’s Saturday night Premier League clash, with Baggies manager Tony Pulis looking for a win over his former club.

West Brom have struggled to put in strong performances this season but will be pleased by the fact that they are eight points clear of the relegation zone after 26 games. They have only won one of their last six, though, and need to try and find some consistency.

They haven’t won at home since early January and Baggies fans will still be worried about the threat of relegation as after Saturday’s game they play Leicester, Manchester United and Arsenal.

Their 3-1 FA Cup loss at Reading was hugely disappointing and they will hope to bounce back with a Premier League win here.

Crystal Palace have not won a Premier League game in nine outings and have been sucked into a potential relegation dogfight. They are level on points with West Brom and so Saturday’s game is a big one for both sides.

After an unbelievable start to the season, and potential talk of European qualification, the Eagles have fallen from grace at a rate of knots.

Their FA Cup run, which was extended at the weekend following a 1-0 at White Hart Lane against Spurs, should suppress groans from supporters but things need to change for Palace, and soon.

The reverse fixture at Selhurst Park ended 2-0 to the Eagles and West Brom will be out for revenge here in what should be a close-fought game.

Team News

West Bromwich Albion will be hopeful Craig Dawson and Gareth McAuley will shake off injuries in time to feature but both are doubts. James Morrison, Jonny Evans and Callum McManaman are all out.

Crystal Palace are only missing two first team regulars as James McArthur and Jason Puncheon remain out. Yannick Bolasie is back and should start here after coming off the bench in Palace’s FA Cup win at Tottenham on Sunday.

Key Points

West Brom’s last five in the Premier League: L/D/D/L/W

Crystal Palace’s last five in the Premier League: L/L/L/D/L

Key Stat: Crystal Palace are without a win in nine matches in the Premier League.

Key Player: Salomon Rondon – The Venezuelan striker has become the leading man in the West Brom attack and the Baggies will want to take advantage of Crystal Palace’s bad run of league form here. Rondon will be a nuisance for the Palace defence from the start and will expect to find the scoresheet.

Score Prediction

West Bromwich Albion 1-1 Crystal Palace – It will be extremely difficult for the Baggies to keep out a strong Palace attack on Saturday. The return of Yannick Bolasie is crucial for the Eagles, proven by his return coinciding with the FA Cup win at Spurs last weekend. However, Tony Pulis will want to avoid defeat when his former club visit on Saturday evening and this looks set to be a close contest.

Premier League Preview and Prediction: West Ham United vs West Bromwich Albion

Competition: Premier League – West Ham United vs. West Bromwich Albion

Venue: Upton Park – Sunday, November 29 – 14:05 GMT (09:05 ET)

Match Odds: West Ham 21/20 – Draw 12/5 – West Brom 13/5

Match Preview

West Ham United welcome West Bromwich Albion to Upton Park in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon as they look to get back on track.

The Hammers are without a win since their victory over Chelsea last month and certainly need to pick up three points to regain some confidence.

They come into this one off the back of that 4-1 thumping at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur last weekend and so things can surely only improve.

West Ham’s Premier League record: P13 – W6 – D3 – L4

West Ham have already recorded wins over some of the best sides in the league this season but need to make sure they are picking up points consistently to improve what looks like being a good season.

West Brom come into this one off the back of their impressive 2-1 win over Arsenal last weekend which saw them get back to winning ways after two consecutive losses.

The Baggies are sitting 12th in the Premier League and are looking steady. Their confidence will be sky-high after that victory but they must capitalise on that result and continue to pick up points if they are to progress as a side.

The last two meetings between these two at Upton Park in the Premier League have ended in a draw, with the sides sharing eight goals between them, so it is usually an action-packed fixture.

A win here would see West Brom move within a point of West Ham, so there is a lot to play for.

Team News

West Ham are expected to be without as many as six players. James Collins and Mark Noble are suspended, while Enner Valencia, Dimitri Payet and Darren Randolph are out. Reece Oxford is a doubt.

West Brom have two players missing. Chris Brunt is suspended while Ben Foster remains out. Serge Gnabry is available for selection after sitting out the win over his parent club Arsenal and Gareth McAuley returns after his suspension.

Key Points

West Ham’s last five: W/W/L/D/L

West Brom’s last five: W/W/L/L/W

Key Stat: West Ham are unbeaten in their last six home matches against West Brom in all competitions.

Key Player: Manuel Lanzini – The West Ham midfielder will need to step up in the absence of Payet, he has netted four already this season.

Score Prediction

West Ham 2-2 West Brom – These two have both picked up some good results this season but given recent form they could be a little tentative in this one and recent meetings suggest they will be hard to separate.

Premier League Preview and Prediction: West Brom vs Arsenal

Competition: Premier League – West Bromwich Albion vs. Arsenal

Venue: The Hawthorns – Saturday, November 21 – 15:00 GMT (10:00 ET)

Match Odds: West Brom 11/2 – Draw 16/5 – Arsenal 1/2

Match Preview

West Bromwich Albion welcome Arsenal to the Hawthorns on Saturday afternoon as Premier League action returns following the international break.

The Baggies have had two weeks to reflect on consecutive defeats to Leicester and Man United, which has left them thirteenth in the table after a satisfactory opening 12 games.

Tony Pulis has seen his side struggle to put the ball in the back of the net this season, scoring just ten goals in the Premier League, meaning they have the joint worst attacking record alongside Aston Villa and Stoke.

Another problem for West Brom has been picking up points on home soil, recording just one win from six games at the Hawthorns (D1, L4), so they’ll be desperate to put that right.

West Brom’s Premier League record: P12 – W4 – D2 – L6

By stark contrast to West Brom’s home form, Arsenal boast the best away record in the league with five wins out of six on the road.

The Gunners come into this in good form, even though their run of five straight league wins was ended by Tottenham, following the 1-1 draw at home to their North London rivals last time out.

A win for Arsenal over West Brom would take them top of the Premier League and put pressure on Man City who face Liverpool in the evening fixture on Saturday.

Arsenal’s Premier League record: P12 – W8 – D2 – L2

The last meeting between these two sides was a comfortable 4-1 win for Arsenal on the final day of last season, while the last clash at the Hawthorns saw the Gunners claim a narrow 1-0 victory thanks to a Danny Welbeck header.

Team News

West Brom will be without Gareth McAuley who is serving a one-match ban following his red card against Man United. Ben Foster remains out with a long-term knee injury, while the on-loan Serge Gnabry cannot play against his parent club. Chris Brunt’s fitness will be assessed as he has a slight groin problem.

Hector Bellerin will return to the squad following a groin injury. Aaron Ramsey (hamstring) and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (hamstring) are unlikely to recover in time for this game but could return in midweek. Laurent Koscielny may be rested following an understandably tough week for the Frenchman. Meanwhile, Theo Walcott (calf), Tomas Rosicky (knee), Jack Wilshere (ankle) and Danny Welbeck (knee) remain out.

Key Points

West Brom’s last five in the Premier League: L/W/W/L/L

Arsenal’s last five in the Premier League: W/W/W/W/D

Key Stat: West Brom have only beaten Arsenal once in their last 13 meetings in the Premier League (D2, L10).

Key Player: Mesut Ozil – The German midfield maestro has been influential this season and already has ten assists to his name. He’ll be hoping to continue his fine form.

Score Prediction

West Brom 0-2 Arsenal  Arsenal have the joint second strongest defence in the league. Combine that fact with West Brom’s lack of goals, poor home form and the Gunners’ excellent away record and you can only really see one outcome here.

STATS: Chelsea projected to battle relegation based on recent history

Chelsea’s problems so far this season have been documented far and wide. Jose Mourinho is under enormous pressure to turn things around after watching his side lose six of their first 11 games in the Premier League.

The Portuguese manager’s job is under threat, according to multiple reports, and there is little wonder when you look at the fate of other Premier League sides that have started with identical records in recent years.

Five sides have started the season with the same record as Chelsea (W3 D2 L6) over the past four campaigns, with three of those going on to suffer relegation by the end of the season.

Table: The last five sides to start with identical league records to Chelsea after 11 games.

West Bromwich Albion managed to turn their season around despite a poor start in the 2011/12 season as they ended up finishing 10th with 47 points unde Roy Hodgson’s guidance.

However, Wolves struggled badly after an identical start, going on to finish bottom of the table and suffering relegation to the Championship.

Wigan (2012/13) and Norwich (2013/14) also suffered relegation after picking up 11 points from 11 games and so using the word crisis to describe Chelsea’s start is hardly an overreaction.

Using these statistics as a guide, it appears as though Chelsea’s problems will only worsen.

Although that’s not accounting for the fact that they’ve got a squad of elite professionals, many of whom lifted the title just six months ago.

Table: Chelsea's projected league finish based on recent history of sides with same starting record.

Table: Chelsea’s projected league finish based on recent history of sides with same starting record.

As the projection above shows, Chelsea look set to end the year in a relegation battle. That’s based on the last five teams’ finishes after starting with the same 11-point record through 11 games.

Finishing on that projected 36-point tally would be Chelsea’s lowest amount accrued in the Premier League era. The last time they picked up fewer points was back in the Football League First Division in the 1978/79 season (20).

Mourinho is in the middle of the biggest challenge of his managerial career and the spotlight is fully fixed on the Blues.

Their next Premier League game comes away at Stoke. Chelsea were eliminated from the League Cup last Wednesday after losing on penalties away at Stoke and so it’s difficult to see them picking up three points.

Match Preview

Crystal Palace host West Bromwich Albion on Saturday afternoon in a clash which sees Tony Pulis return to his old stomping ground, Selhurst Park with the Baggies.

Palace will want defer from their current form as they have only managed one win in their last three after a solid start which saw them sit second in the league early on.

Playing without a registered striker, Palace have suffered without the outlet of a natural forward and Bakary Sako (despite his great form) isn’t the answer in the search for an ideal lone frontman.

Tony Pulis’ return to Selhurst Park will be the main draw from this clash as much has been said about who has done a better job at Palace, Pulis or Alan Pardew.

Boasting a great managerial record, Pulis has succeeded where ever he has been and Palace was no different. However, he has struggled to get West Brom to the level they should be operating at so far this term.

West Brom’s record in the Premier League: P7 – W2 – D2 – L3

Suffering with inconsistency, Pulis won’t suffer relegation with West Brom, but a top half finish is a fair way away at the moment.

A win in south London on Saturday would certainly be a huge boost for the Baggies and they will take confidence from the 2-0 win there back in April.

Team News

Crystal Palace are missing up to six players, with Damien Delaney, Mile Jedinak, Joel Ward, Connor Wickham, Marouane Chamakh and Kwesi Appiah all likely to miss out.

West Brom are without Ben Foster as he is still recovering from a serious knee injury. Gareth McAuley is a doubt with a leg injury but could be fit to start. Jonas Olsson is a doubt with an ankle problem.

Key Points

Crystal Palace’s last five: W/W/L/L/W

West Brom’s last five: L/W/D/W/L

Key Stat: West Brom have kept a clean sheet in five of their last seven away matches.

Key Player: Saido Berahino – With two goals in two, the English forward has forced himself back into the West Brom side after his summer transfer saga and will be important if the Baggies are to pick up points here.

Score Prediction

Crystal Palace 1-0 West Brom – We’re not expecting much from this affair in terms of goals as it should be a tight encounter. West Brom are good at defending as a unit and Palace are not frightened to attack in numbers. Though we see the home side just edging a low scoring affair in front of their own fans.

Spurs set to spend £58m on Premier League trio after slow start

Tottenham Hotspur are closing in on moves for three Premier League stars in deals that will cost an estimated total of £58 million.

Spurs have started the new Premier League campaign poorly. Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Leicester means they have picked up just two points from their opening three games and are already four points worse off than at the same stage last year.

But the club are acting to improve the squad before the transfer window closes in seven days, as Victor Wanyama, Yannick Bolasie and Saido Berahino all appear likely to join the Lilywhites.

Berahino was left out of the West Brom squad that lost 3-2 at home to Chelsea on Sunday and Spurs are believed to have offered £20 million to secure his services after an initial £15 million bid was rejected.

The young English striker would offer some much needed support for Harry Kane and would bolster Mauricio Pochettino’s forward options – something everyone knows needs addressing before the window shuts.

Another attacking player could follow the Baggies star as Crystal Palace winger Bolasie appears to be closing in on a move to White Hart Lane.

Reports coming out of the Croydon Advertiser on Monday afternoon suggest the clubs may have agreed a £20 million deal, with talks now underway to see a move for the 26-year-old trickster completed.

Embed from Getty Images

Bolasie netted an impressive 11-minute hat-trick at Sunderland in April and has seemed to improve with each season in the top flight.

As well as needing attacking reinforcements, Spurs have also been crying out for a powerful holding midfielder to join the ranks.

Eric Dier has been used in midfield so far this season, with Ryan Mason and Nabil Bentaleb both partnering him.

But a move for Victor Wanyama could be set to take place before next Monday’s deadline after the Kenyan reportedly told Southampton that he wants to leave the club, despite then playing against Watford on Sunday.

Embed from Getty Images

The Saints value Wanyama at £18 million and are reluctant to sell. But his desire to be reunited with Pochettino could force a move through in the coming days.

Spurs have already signed Kieran Trippier, Kevin Wimmer, Toby Alderweireld and Clinton N’Jie this summer but three more faces could be set to arrive in the next week.

Tottenham have only made one deadline day signing in the summer over the past two seasons in the shape of Benjamin Stambouli, who has already been moved on.

Although the club did sign Rafael Van Der Vaart, Scott Parker, Moussa Dembele and Hugo Lloris on the summer deadline day’s between 2010 and 2012, proving that late deals can be highly effective.

Should Spurs sign Bolasie, Berahino and Wanyama before Monday’s deadline? Is £58 million too much for the trio?

Premier League Preview and Prediction: West Bromwich Albion vs Manchester City

Venue: The Hawthorns – Monday, August 10 – 20:00 BST (15:00 ET)

Match Odds: West Bromwich Albion 9/2 – Draw 14/5 – Manchester City 8/13

Match Preview

The opening Monday Night Football of the season sees Manchester City travel to the Hawthorns to take on Tony Pulis’ West Bromwich Albion.

West Brom come into the game off the back of five wins on the trot in preseason and look very organised defensively.

The Baggies will be looking to build on last season as they became a tough side to beat at home under Pulis.

Pulis has strengthened well this summer after bringing in James McLean, James Chester and Rickie Lambert and all three will be hoping to make their debuts here.

The future of young Saido Berahino is still up in the air, and with other first team strikers like Brown Ideye in form in front of goal, don’t be surprised if Berahino is benched.

Man City have been relatively quiet in the window, apart from their high-profile capture of England international Raheem Sterling.

City have mainly focused on bringing in young English talent with the likes of Fabian Delph and Patrick Roberts joining the Citizens this summer.

Make no mistake, City will be challenging for the title once again this term and if star players like Yaya Toure return to peak form, they are serious contenders to dethrone Chelsea.

Starting with three points will be the target this weekend but a trip to West Brom represents a tricky early test for Manuel Pellegrini’s side.

Team News

West Brom are still missing Ben Foster so Boaz Myhill should deputise for the England ‘keeper. Gareth MCauley is a doubt with a calf/shin injury. Rickie Lambert could make his first start for the club in attack.

Manchester City may be without David Silva, Samir Nasri and Sergio Aguero through illness but they are expected to shake it off to feature. Yaya Toure picked up a knock to the head playing Real Madrid so is a doubt. Fabian Delph and Gael Clichy are both out. Raheem Sterling is expected to start.

Key Points

West Brom’s preseason form: L/L/W/W/W/W/W

Manchester City’s preseason form: W/D/L/W/L

Key Stat: Manchester City have won their last seven matches against West Brom in the Premier League.

Key Player: Raheem Sterling – £49 million can get you a lot, but Sterling could be worth that fee come the end of the season. His speed across ten yards could cause the Baggies some serious problems on Monday night.

Score Prediction

West Brom 1-1 Manchester City – We’re expecting West Brom to be hard to beat this season but Manchester City are still a superpower in the Premier League and should be beating everyone. That said, we’re expecting a score draw to ease both sides into the new season.

Match Preview

Arsenal host West Brom on the final weekend of the Premier League season with both sides knowing they have very little to play for.

Arsenal have all but secured third spot after their 0-0 draw with Sunderland on Wednesday means that just a draw will be enough to seal a top three finish this weekend.

The Gunners cannot finish second but Arsene Wenger will be hoping his side can finish a fine season with a win ahead of the FA Cup final next weekend.

Arsenal have not won in their last three and lost just their second home game of the season to Arsenal a fortnight ago, so it’s important they try and end with victory in their last league game of the campaign.

West Brom are in much better form than their opponents, after going unbeaten through their last five, including a 3-0 win against the champions Chelsea last Monday.

The Baggies lost the corresponding fixture 1-0 at home to Arsenal in November and have not beaten the Gunners in their last nine meetings in all competitions.

They have been excellent under Tony Pulis this term and have only lost two of their last nine away games in the league, and will be hoping to end the season on a high.

Team News

Arsene Wenger will rest a few first-team players ahead of the FA Cup final and so some fringe players could see action. Danny Welbeck is ruled out once again, while Mikel Arteta and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Mathieu Debuchy remain doubts. Nacho Monreal could return at left-back after missing the midweek game against Sunderland.

West Brom have just one injury concern as Ben Foster will be out again. Tony Pulis could name an unchanged lineup for this one after seeing such a good performance against Chelsea last time out.

Key Points

Arsenal’s last five: D/W/L/D/D

West Brom’s last five: W/D/W/D/W

Key Stat: Arsenal are unbeaten in 34 of their last 36 home matches in the Premier League.

Key Player: Saido Berahino – The young Englishman scored twice against Chelsea and will want to impress against quality opposition once again ahead of this summer’s Under-21 European Championship.

Score Prediction

Arsenal 1-1 West Brom – Arsenal will be resting star players and won’t be at their strongest, but the Baggies will be a real threat regardless in this end of season clash. Expect this to be tight as a draw looks like it could be on the cards.

Venue: Selhurst Park – Saturday, April 18th – 15:00 BST (10:00 ET)

Match Odds: Crystal Palace 10/11 – Draw 12/5 – West Brom 3/1

Match Preview

Crystal Palace take on West Brom on Saturday afternoon as Alan Pardew’s soaring Eagles face off against Tony Pulis’ Baggies at Selhurst Park.

Crystal Palace are in a terrific run of form, with four wins on the bounce, while West Brom have suffered three consecutive defeats, including a morale damaging loss at home to fellow relegation rivals Leicester City.

The Baggies have conceded 10 in their last three Premier League games and Pulis needs to shore up the backline quickly if they are to keep out of the relegation zone.

Since Alan Pardew’s appointment, Palace have been fantastic in the league, winning eight of his twelve games in charge, suffering three defeats and drawing just the once. They have shown the form of a team chasing those all important Champions League places and look to be in great shape.

Goals have won those matches and critics and pundits alike have been impressed with the Palace forward line that boasts the likes of Yannick Bolasie, Wilfried Zaha and Glenn Murray. Murray and Bolasie both put in incredible performances at Sunderland last weekend and will look to pick up where they left off against the Baggies.

The game at the Stadium of Light saw Bolasie hit an 11-minute hat-trick, becoming the first Palace player to net three in a game in the Premier League, with Glenn Murray also scoring, taking his tally to six goals.

West Brom are just seven points clear of the drop. They are not in any real danger as such but if their poor form continues they will be looking down the table until the season ends.

Tony Pulis has never been relegated as a manager and he always seems to get his teams out of trouble and help stabilise them. That was certainly the case with Crystal Palace last year, who he took from the depths of relegation to an 11th place finish and he will return to Selhurst Park on Saturday.

Pulis was responsible for some important signings to the Palace side that Pardew features in his team, such as Joe Ledley and Scott Dann, before a reported disagreement over Palace’s transfer policies led to Pulis’ departure from the South London club on the eve of this season’s opener.

A win for either side in this one would be vital, with Palace looking to climb into the top half of the table, while West Brom need to end their torrid form here as they still need to travel to teams in the top five before the end of the season.

The reverse fixture saw a 2-2 draw at The Hawthorns back in October, with goals from Brede Hangeland and Mile Jedinak for Palace only to be pegged back by a Victor Anichebe and a Saido Berahino penalty.

Team News

Crystal Palace have doubts over Jordan Mutch, Frazier Campbell and Marouane Chamakh but James McArthur and Pape Souare could return from their knocks.

For West Brom, Ben Foster will continue to be sidelined until around October, while the Baggies will hand a late fitness test to Brown Ideye.

Key Points

Crystal Palace’s last five: L/W/W/W/W

West Brom’s last five: L/W/L/L/L

Key Stat: In the last four matches between the two in all competitions there have been 15 bookings but no dismissals.

Key Player: Yannick Bolasie – The Congolese winger hit a superb hat-trick last weekend at Sunderland and will be thriving for more goals against a West Brom defence that is failing to impress.

Score Prediction

Crystal Palace 3-1 West Brom – Palace to get a win that could lift them into the top half of the table. West Brom should get on the scoresheet, but they look likely to miss out on points as Pardew’s men are in excellent form.

Match Preview

Manchester City welcome West Brom to the Etihad stadium on Saturday lunchtime in a must win game for the Premier League reigning champions.

Man City’s hopes of retaining their title are rapidly fading after they were dealt another major blow by losing 1-0 to Burnley at Turf Moor last Saturday and are now six points behind leaders Chelsea who also have a game in hand.

West Brom returned to winning ways with a 1-0 win at home to Stoke last weekend thanks to a goal from in-form striker Brown Ideye and they look set to comfortably secure their Premier League status for the sixth consecutive season.

Manuel Pellegrini needs to make sure his City side don’t suffer a hangover from their midweek defeat to Barcelona at the Nou Camp which saw them eliminated from the Champions League and has made their preparation time for this game very short.

The Citizens have recorded just three wins in their last nine games (D3, L3) which has seen them drop way off the pace at the top of the table and also allowed the chasing pack to get within touching distance.

Failure to win for City could potentially see them slip down to third place in the league and a defeat may also see them fall as far as fourth depending on Arsenal and Manchester United’s results, so it’s imperative they get a victory, not only for their title hopes but also for the Champions League qualification fight.

Embed from Getty Images

Tony Pulis‘ West Brom side have only lost two of their last ten in the league (W4, D4), so they certainly pose a threat and may smell blood after City’s inconsistent recent form.

Having said that, two wins from 14 on the road this season doesn’t make for pretty reading for the Baggies and their last win away at Man City was a 2-1 success back in February 2003.

West Brom are eight points above the drop zone with nine games remaining, so two or three more wins would almost guarantee their safety.

The reverse fixture at The Hawthorns on Boxing Day ended in a 3-1 win for Man City who will be desperately hoping for a repeat result.

Team News

Man City have no known injuries or suspensions to report and will hope that the likes of Yaya Toure, David Silva and Sergio Aguero can find their form.

West Brom will be without goalkeeper Ben Foster after he picked up a knee injury in the game against Stoke. Chris Brunt and Claudio Yacob will also miss the game through suspension. Victor Anichebe could return to the squad following a groin injury, while Brown Ideye will hope to recover from a knock he picked up last weekend. Callum McManaman is suffering with a foot injury and is a doubt.

Key Points

Manchester City’s last five in the Premier League: W/W/L/W/L

West Brom’s last five in the Premier League: W/D/W/L/W

Key Stat: West Brom have never won at the Etihad Stadium (P7, D2, L5).

Key Player: David Silva – The Spanish midfield maestro is instrumental and if opponents stifle him, then City tend to struggle. If Silva can find time and space to pull the strings then Man City will be confident of victory.

Score Prediction

Manchester City 1-0 West Bromwich Albion – City know they aren’t performing to the best of their ability at the moment and they will need to grind out a result against a well organised West Brom side.
